NSW Employee Numbers
K&L Gates employs approximately 170 people in the Sydney office including 30 partners and over 80 legal staff.
Seasonal Clerkships
Our Sydney office offers a 10 week summer clerkship program with 2 rotations.
A clerkship is the ideal opportunity for you to explore what we have to offer. Not only will you gain insight into a career in law, you will meet our people, sample our culture and determine if K&L Gates is the right career choice for you.
As a law student in your penultimate year at university, this is an opportunity to gain practical work experience through participation in client meetings, court visits and involvement in real legal work.
Professional development is provided throughout your clerkship. It begins on your first day with a comprehensive induction program and continues through your clerkship enabling you to learn important skills that lay the foundation for your legal career.
You will work closely with a supervising partner or senior associate who is responsible for your daily work. A graduate or junior lawyer will also be there to provide buddy support throughout your clerkship.
In addition to the daily on the job feedback and guidance you receive, you will also be involved in a structured performance review at the conclusion of each rotation.
As a clerk you will have the opportunity to be involved in many social activities. K&L Gates' clerks participate in the inter-firm sports and trivia competitions, and are encouraged to attend firm wide celebrations such as Christmas parties and staff drinks.
Our aim is to offer all of our summer clerks a place on our Graduate Program following successful completion of their legal studies.
Graduate Program
Our graduate program is designed to give you the technical expertise and commercial context to succeed. We aim to recruit our graduates through our summer clerkship program.
The program runs for 12 months, in which time you will complete 3 practice area rotations across at least 1 litigious area and 1 transactional or advisory area. You will be exposed to a variety of areas of commercial law in all your rotations.
As a graduate you are supported with a buddy, supervisor and mentor. Partners and senior lawyers will support and guide you through each rotation and ensure you get the necessary development. Your buddy, a junior lawyer, will help you transition into your new role.
Our graduate learning and development program runs weekly. It combines Practical Legal Training (delivered in-house by the College of Law), with sessions presented by partners, lawyers, external presenters and our learning and development team. Our program covers technical legal skills, business knowledge, client skills and team and personal effectiveness.
As a graduate you will have many opportunities to be involved in an array of firm events and activities to match your interest, whether they be social, sporting, business or community focused.
Recruitment Process
Applications open on 15 June 2017 and close on 16 July 2017 for our 2017/18 Summer Clerk program. Our recruitment process will consist of 2 rounds of interviews.
Offers will be made on Wednesday 4 October 2017.
