WA Employee Numbers

K&L Gates employs 55 people in the Perth office, including 10 partners and over 30 legal staff.

Seasonal Clerkships

Our Perth office offers Vacation Clerkship programs to law students in their penultimate year of study i.e. students must have between 2 and 4 semesters of their law degree to complete as at 30 June 2015.

A clerkship is the ideal opportunity for you to explore what we have to offer. Not only will you gain insight into a career in law, you will meet our people, sample our culture and determine if K&L Gates is the right career choice for you.

As a law student in your penultimate year at university, this is an opportunity to gain practical work experience through participation in client meetings, court visits and involvement in real legal work.

Professional development is provided throughout your clerkship. It begins on your first day with a comprehensive induction program and continues through your clerkship enabling you to learn important skills that lay the foundation for your legal career.

You will work closely with a supervising partner or senior lawyer, who is responsible for your daily work. A graduate or junior lawyer will also provide buddy support throughout your clerkship.

In addition to the daily on the job feedback and guidance you receive, you will also be involved in a structured performance review at the conclusion of your clerkship.

As a clerk you will have the opportunity to be involved in many firm activities. Social club and sporting events, CSR and vitality programs, and firm wide celebrations such as the End of Financial Year and the Christmas parties are great ways for you to have some fun during your clerkship and experience all that K&L Gates has to offer.

Length of program

Our Perth Summer Clerkship Program will take place over the university break from Monday 23 November - Friday 11 December 2015.

Number of clerks employed

During our clerkship period, we will employ up to 8 clerks.

Graduate Program

Our graduate program is designed to give you the technical expertise and commercial context to succeed.

The program runs for 12 months, in which time you will complete three practice group rotations across at least one litigious group and one transactional or advisory group. You will be exposed to a variety of areas of commercial law in all your rotations.

As a graduate you are supported with a buddy, supervisor and mentor. Partners and senior lawyers will support and guide you through each rotation and ensure you get the necessary development. Your buddy, a junior lawyer, will help you transition into your new role.

Our graduate learning and development program runs weekly. It combines Practical Legal Training (delivered in-house by the College of Law), with sessions presented by partners, lawyers, external presenters and our learning and development team. Our program covers legal technical skills, business knowledge, client skills and personal effectiveness.

As a graduate you will have many opportunities to be involved in an array of firm events and activities to match your interest, whether they be social, sporting, business or community focused.

Number of rotations

As a graduate with us you will gain diverse legal experience in three practice areas during your first year.
