Sydney offers summer clerkships to students in their penultimate year. Employment periods are based on university term dates and the business requirements at the time.

Length of program

Summer clerkships in Sydney typically run for a period of eight weeks from November through to February with a break during the Christmas/New Year period.

Time of offer

Our recruitment processes are in line with The Law Society of New South Wales Summer Clerkship Guidelines. Summer clerkship offers will be made on 4 October 2017.

Number of clerks employed

This depends on business requirements at the time, but generally 3 or 4 each year.

In order to make the transition from university to legal practice, a range of learning opportunities, educational support and professional experience is critical. Our Graduate Program assists young practitioners in making the transition and provides a solid basis for future success.

During the program you will work across two of our key practice areas, completing six month rotations. One rotation will ideally be completed in a litigation based practice area.

Recruitment Process

Summer Clerkships

The selection process for successful candidates will consist of the initial application, followed by an interview and then a selection event, both of which are held at our offices.

Graduate Program

Completing a clerkship with Thomsons is the best way to be eligible for a position in our Graduate Development Program. The selection process is an assessment of your performance as a Clerk.

This program is geared towards expanding your skills across a range of practice areas. It runs for 12 months and consists of a minimum two rotations. You will be able to express your preference for the areas of practice through which you would like to rotate. It's also the ideal way to complete your Practical Legal Training (PLT) with the firm's support.
