Graduate Program

Our graduate program builds on your university education in a range of practical ways from structured training, to workshops, to formal and informal mentoring. But mostly by doing real work for real clients.

We’re looking for people with the intelligence to tackle complex and interesting legal scenarios, energy to absorb new concepts and willingness to work productively with lots of different people.

And we want recruits who are friendly and have a down-to-earth style. Law is a people business, so this is important when dealing with clients and it’s also a key ingredient in our happy workplace.

You are the future of our firm, so we invest in you. We make sure that you not only get a first-rate introduction to the law, but also an exciting start to a rewarding career. Your graduate year is filled with learning, strong working relationships, friendship, and lots of fun.

Program structure

Our graduate program runs over a 12 month period (commencing in early March) and includes 30 weeks of part time study at The College of Law.

The year is built on four practice group rotations of three months each, covering both commercial and litigious areas of practice. We'll ask you to indicate your preferences and we'll do our best to accommodate everybody's interests.

The rotations help you develop broad skills in the law, an understanding of the different areas of our business, and give you a range of experiences to help you choose an area of practice following qualification.

Deferrals

We are very happy to discuss deferring your graduate year. Any interest in deferring an offer for a graduate position should be raised with us at the time of your graduate application if not before.

Target number of graduate recruits - VIC

We are aiming to recruit approximately 7-9 graduates to join us in our Melbourne office for the 2019 program.

Recruitment Process

Graduates

We aim to recruit our graduates directly through our seasonal clerkship intakes and therefore follow the Priority Offer model under the LIV Traineeship Recruitment Guidelines. Should additional positions become available, we will invite students who haven't completed a seasonal clerkship with us to apply during the market application period.

Seasonal Clerks

We aim to recruit students in their penultimate year of law. During the recruitment process, you will have an opportunity to meet a wide range of people in the firm during the interview process with us. We understand how important it is for you to meet lawyers in the firm and get a firsthand account of life at Lander & Rogers. You’ll meet with a partner or senior associate, plus a representative of our HR team. Our interviews are relaxed and conversational in style. It's an opportunity for you to tell us more about the things you’ve set out in your CV and more about your interests and aspirations in the law and life in general.

The interview is also a perfect time for you to test us. We'll answer any questions you might have about the firm and about what it's really like to work with us.

Before your interview we'll make sure you know who you’ll meet, so you'll have time to prepare for the discussion. On completion of the interview stage, we invite all students who have taken the time to meet with us to come back again to share a cocktail or two, and meet a larger group of our lawyers. You can test your questions on them too!

Seasonal Clerk and Graduate Offers

We are a signatory to the LIV Seasonal Clerkship Guidelines, which were established to ensure fairness throughout the recruitment process and determine the timing of the annual seasonal clerk recruitment cycle. For more information on the Guidelines, visit the Law Institute of Victoria website.
