Seasonal Clerkship Program

Our Seasonal Clerkship Program is designed to give you a real taste of life at Russell Kennedy. It’s a great insight into working here, especially for a lawyer starting out their legal career.

We’ve designed our Seasonal Clerkship Program to be informative and interesting to help you decide whether you would like to apply for a Law Graduate position. From the outset clerks are partnered with a Mentor and a Buddy who will ensure that they receive the necessary support to get the most out of their time with us. Our clerks will be doing real work such as drafting correspondence, assisting with research, attending court and participating in client meetings. 

Clerks will also be able to attend our in-house seminars for professional development and spend time with our current Law Graduates to learn about their experiences, challenges and triumphs.

Length of program

Russell Kennedy offers three seasonal clerkship intakes in November-December (4 weeks), January-February (4 weeks) and July (3 weeks).

Graduate Program

Russell Kennedy's Graduate Program intake consists of approximately four to six Law Graduates each year. We have a strong track record for retaining our Law Graduates with many of them having gone on to become Principals at Russell Kennedy. 

Law Graduates undertake a brief induction program which provides an overview of the organisational structure, the types of work undertaken, our clients, and an overview of the training that we provide. Law Graduates are also given the opportunity to work with practitioners at all levels during their rotations, as well as chance to meet with barristers, clients and witnesses.

Upon commencement, Law Graduates are allocated a buddy to assist with the transition from university to full-time employment. Law Graduates are also allocated an ‘Assistant Supervisor’ as a point of contact during each rotation and a Principal Supervisor.

Law Graduates meet with their Assistant Supervisors on a consistent basis to ensure regular and ongoing feedback is provided. This meeting also gives them with the opportunity to sign off on the tasks in their workbook. The Law Graduates also meet with their Principal Supervisors on a regular basis to ensure they are up-to-date with their workbook and that they have reached the appropriate level of competency and understanding of the tasks they are signing off on.

As part of the Supervised Legal Training, Russell Kennedy’s Law Graduates also document the work that they undertake during their Graduate year in a Supervised Legal Training Workbook. This workbook captures the work undertaken in regards compulsory values and skills within various practice group areas.

Length of Program

The twelve month program is designed to ensure that Graduates are exposed to the firm's wide range of practice areas. The program consists of rotations through all areas of practice.

Number of Rotations

Russell Kennedy's traineeship program involves four rotations. Each rotation is for a period of three months.

Applications for seasonal clerkship positions are accepted online. Please note that Russell Kennedy aims to recruit Law Graduates from students that participate in the Seasonal Clerkship program only. Should additional positions become available, we may also interview students that have not completed a Seasonal Clerkship at Russell Kennedy.
