Firm Background

At Arnold Bloch Leibler, we believe great minds think differently. We are committed to investing in the meaningful professional development of each of our graduates. Our single practice group experience will provide the breadth and depth of exposure you need to think outside the square and excel in the law.

Arnold Bloch Leibler is the commercial law firm clients turn to for advice and support on their most complex legal matters, high stakes transactions, litigation and commercial decisions. With a reputation built on a long history of success, our lawyers are often at the centre of law reform and regularly advise on landmark matters.

Our firm advises entrepreneurial family-owned businesses, ASX listed companies, , private clients and international corporations. We enjoy long-standing relationships with a select group of other professional advisors − including accountants, hedge funds, insolvency practitioners, private bankers and equity firms and overseas-based specialist law firms.

We pride ourselves on our ability to deliver innovative strategic guidance and solutions to complex problems related to our clients’ commercial interests, legal position and reputation.

Firm Objectives

Successful companies are first, best or different. So are successful people. At Arnold Bloch Leibler, we strive to be all three and encourage our people to do so too. It is not surprising that the firm is involved in some of the most complex transactions in the country and that our lawyers create innovative, commercially savvy and cost-effective solutions to seemingly complex and costly problems on a daily basis.

Every aspect of the firm is designed to the individual requirements of our clients. We choose the very best people who are as motivated and passionate as our clients. We select the best systems, support structures and professional development programmes and we have created an environment that is energetic. And while we are small enough to deliver personal service, we are also large enough to address highly involved problems.

Arnold Bloch Leibler seeks to differentiate itself from its competitors by a combination of its:

  • size and structure;
  • innovation and entrepreneurship;
  • partnership with clients;
  • different perspectives;
  • working relationship; and
  • value delivered to clients.

With a small firm feel and a big firm reputation, our clients benefit from our partner-led and personal approach, and our deep interest in their matters and businesses.

Areas of Legal Practice

We organise our practice groups to allow our lawyers to be broad generalists, our groups are split between transactions and disputes. From the client perspective, our services cover:

  • banking & finance;
  • commercial & corporate;
  • competition;
  • litigation & dispute resolution;
  • native title and public interest law;
  • property, development & construction;
  • private clients;
  • public companies;
  • reconstruction & insolvency;
  • taxation;
  • technology & intellectual property; and
  • workplace advisory

Employee Numbers

Arnold Bloch Leibler has 38 partners and staff of approximately 260 in total, across our two offices in Melbourne and Sydney.

Firm Culture

Arnold Bloch Leibler’s core values centre on our people, our clients and the innovative, commercially focused advice for which the firm has become well-known.

We are driven by excellence and do not accept mediocrity. And, we are passionate about what we do.

We have a deep and enduring commitment to giving back to the community. For us, it is a privilege and it is the right thing to do. Through our public interest practice, our lawyers engage with many organisations that are active in cultural, health, religious, Indigenous and environmental sectors to defend or assert rights, to develop the law or to improve the administration of justice.

We are committed to reconciliation and acknowledge the disadvantages faced by Indigenous Australians. Our firm is actively involved in those who are dedicated to remedying the imbalances that exist in our society.

Promotion Opportunities

Arnold Bloch Leibler is a meritocracy. We reward success and excellence. It is the ultimate aim that every new law graduate will one day become a partner of the firm.

Our graduate traineeship program provides you with every opportunity to reach your potential quickly. With smaller teams and plenty of support, you will have the chance to hone your skills and broaden your knowledge.

We don’t rotate you through practice areas, because we know the best way for you to get a handle on what you are doing is by seeing matters through from start to finish. By staying with a practice area, you will see events unfold. But you will still be exposed to other legal areas because you will be working on projects in fluid, multi-disciplinary teams.

Knowing you are going to be a permanent part of their team, partners and senior staff will invest more time in your professional development. Also, you will not just meet clients, you will develop a relationship with them. We understand that people change their minds, so if you have a genuine desire to pursue a career in another area, or try something different, we will do our best to make it happen.

You’ll find we don’t have a set formula for promotions. So if you have got what it takes, you will be operating quickly at a high level and rewarded on merit.

Attributes & Skills

When recruiting clerks and graduate trainees, we look for people who are seeking, and can provide, something out of the ordinary. Just as we encourage our lawyers to challenge convention and seek opportunities, we expect the same attributes in our clerks and graduate trainees.

We value imagination as well as intelligence, lateral thinking as highly as logic, and life experience in addition to academic excellence. Good grades indicate not just ability but also that you have the application and commitment to achieve results.

Successfully combining study with sporting, musical, community or other personal interests tells us you are good with people, and good with your time. A sense of humour also helps.

Postgraduate Study

We are committed to providing our lawyers with an environment in which they can continue to learn and grow. As part of that environment, we encourage our lawyers to undertake postgraduate study.

While many of our lawyers undertake Masters courses, others simply do specific subjects or seminars of interest. We support those undertaking study both financially and by allowing study/exam leave.

Legal Training

Arnold Bloch Leibler is committed to providing its people with the support, resources and training necessary to deliver exemplary client service. The provision of professional development opportunities is also central to the firm's culture.

Arnold Bloch Leibler's professional development program consists of hands-on training, as this is the way people learn best, in-house seminars, external courses and the possibility to undertake postgraduate studies.

Graduate trainees and seasonal clerks are given access to a variety of in-house seminars that introduce them to basic legal and technical skills which showcase the firm's legal practice areas and the career paths of several of the firm's partners and senior lawyers.

We are very proud of our in-house graduate training program. Our grads don’t go off to PLT (Leo Cussen or College of Law) − instead they learn from our best and brightest partners and senior associates from around the firm, who are leaders in their respective fields. The SLT (Supervised Legal Training) program is run to be practical, engaging and designed to upskill our lawyers for practice and there’s no exams at the end of your traineeship to test you.

The training program is a real point of difference, and something our graduates genuinely enjoy about their overall graduate experience. Training is scheduled (usually) once a week. This means that you aren’t away from the office for long periods of time, and can be involved in matters throughout the duration of your graduate year.

At Arnold Bloch Leibler, our clerkship program has been tailored to reflect our traineeship program, providing real life work rather than mock exercises.
