Summer Clerkships

Our 9 week summer clerk program is structured to introduce you to all areas of firm life and consists of two rotations of five weeks in any of our practice areas, including pro bono.

During the program you will start to understand the mechanics of legal practice through researching legislation and case law, preparing and drafting memos, observing negotiations, meeting clients, attending court, or perhaps working as part of a deal team. All clerks are assigned a supervising partner, mentor and buddy in each group to help them get settled and to provide guidance and on-the-job learning.

Throughout the program our clerks also partcipate in a tailored training program and are invited to attend various firm events, lunches and social activities to help build relationships with people across the firm. In addition there are several inter-firm social activities, such as the weekly sporting competition and annual trivia night.

Aurora Project Native Title Secondment

Gilbert + Tobin offers two Summer Clerks the opportunity to work as an intern in a native title office during their winter university break. The internships are fully funded by the firm and provide you with work experience in native title law. There are placement locations  Australia-wide and students are placed according to the needs of the Aurora project.

What are we looking for?

Our lawyers are bright, commercially aware and self-motivated with an entrepreneurial spirit. Our culture, people and values all draw dynamic personalities to the firm, yet there is no 'Gilbert + Tobin type' of lawyer. We look for students who are ambitious, bright, friendly and enthusiastic individuals who will thrive in an environment of integrity, respect, innovation and excellence.

Summer Clerk Recruitment Process

Our program is open to students in their penultimate and final year of their legal studies.

At G+T we offer a number of ways for candidates to demonstrate their skills and capabilities through a variety of assessment and interview experiences.

The application form

Complete the online application form. Attach your cover letter, resume and academic transcripts. If your semester results aren’t due for release until after the application closing date, be sure to include a note in your application then email your updated transcript as soon as received, to clerkships@gtlaw.com.au.

Online testing + video interview

If your application progresses to the next stage, you’ll receive an email link to complete an online ability test.

Following testing, successful applicants will be invited via email to participate in a video interview. This will involve a few pre-recorded interview questions, which you can complete via your PC or any mobile device, anywhere you feel comfortable. There’s no preparation required for these and no right or wrong answers!

Super Saturday Selection Day

Upon successful competition of the video interview stage, candidates will be invited to attend Super Saturday. This is a half day event where you will take part in a range of individual and group selection experiences as well as have the opportunity to meet a wide selection of partners, lawyers, graduates and former summer clerks.

We know this part of any recruitment process can be daunting. To help you prepare, we’ll give you plenty of information so you’ll know exactly what to expect on the day. You’ll also a chance to take a closer look into life at G+T at our Summer Clerk Insights Evening, typically held on the Tuesday prior.

Online testing + second round interviews

Prior to your second interview we’ll ask you to complete the online Occupational Profile Questionnaire, a quick test which identifies your preferred working style and behaviours within a workplace context. You can obtain a copy of your results at the end of the clerkship recruitment process.

Second interviews take place in September during business hours. At your second interview, you’ll meet a representative of the People Team and another partner in your practice area of interest. Following your second interview, you’ll be able to speak with a graduate or junior lawyer. Our People Team will provide you with contact details at the time of your second-round interview.

Pre-offer function

All candidates who reach the final stage of the selection process are invited to attend our pre-offer cocktail party.

Graduate Program

Whilst we welcome applications at a graduate level, our summer clerk program forms the core of our graduate recruitment initiatives.

New graduates join the firm in February and August of each year. Our 18 month graduate program consists of two rotations of approximately nine months each. Rotations are available in all our practice areas, including Pro Bono and you will be actively involved in non-chargeable work including business development, knowledge management, training and pro bono matters.

At the end of the 18 month rotation period, we will consult with you regarding your placement into a practice group as a junior lawyer.
