Inside Piper Alderman (SA)


1. What drew you to this firm?

As one of the largest commercial law firms with a solid reputation, Piper Alderman has the skills, expertise and knowledge that I believed would best support my entry into the legal profession. I was confident that as a law graduate I would be provided with opportunities unavailable at other firms.

2. What areas have you worked in?

During my clerkship I was placed in the Corporate team, I was not limited to this area of law though. Through referral by my supervisors or Human Resources I was provided the opportunity to work in Banking and Finance, IPT, Property and Litigation.

3. What type of work have you done in each of these areas?

The type of work has varied from drafting commercial transaction documents to assisting it the preparation of submissions to the Takeovers Panel. The work I have undertaken has always been of value and has enabled me to see how much learning I still have left to do in mu pursuit as a quality lawyer.

4. What clients have you done work for?

I have worked for large multi-national corporations to small family owned businesses. I have really enjoyed the diversity of clientele that I have been able to meet and have been impressed with the complexity of matters I have had exposure too.

5. Have you had much client contact?

I have been given the opportunity to attend client meetings, annual general meetings of corporations and observe numerous board meetings as well as sit in on counsel discussions and litigation processes in the courts.

6. Have you been given much responsibility?

As a clerk my work is closely supervised to ensure quality control. This hands on support has enabled me to quickly develop the necessary understanding required when dealing with clients.

7. What type of training have you undertaken at the firm?

Apart from office management my skills have largely been developed through contact with my supervisors and with other support staff within the firm. There is also a great CLE program available at lunchtime cover many different legal topics and a specific program for law clerks which was very useful.

8. What hours do you generally work? What is expected?

Generally I work from 8am until 6pm with some additional after hours work including some weekends.

9. How have you received feedback about your performance?

Apart from the annual review when my performance is evaluated and assessed, my supervisor provides me with regular feedback, support and positive reinforcement.

10. How would you describe the culture and working environment within the firm?

The firm has a very professional, proactive and positive work culture environment that seeks to provide quality services to its clients.

11. What do you like most about working for the firm?

The variety of work and the strong interpersonal and professional office relationships.

12. What tips would you give to someone applying to your firm?

  • Be honest;
  • Develop a clear understanding of the type of lawyer you want to be;
  • Demonstrate sound interpersonal skills;
  • Fully develop your personal skills and abilities; and
  • Be prepared to work hard.
