Inside TressCox (QLD)


1. What drew you to this firm?

I was drawn to TressCox because of its open and friendly culture as well as its reputation for excellence and innovation in the legal industry.

2. What areas have you worked in?

As a summer clerk, I worked in the litigation, corporate and commercial, and international business divisions. I currently work as a solicitor in the government and probity team.

3. What type of work have you done in each of these areas?

The clerkship experience gave me exposure to a variety of work, including research tasks, drafting advice and court-related work. My current role also involves a variety of tasks, such as providing probity and procurement-related advice, drafting and reviewing contracts and procurement documents, preparing procurement templates, attending client meetings and conducting contract law training.

4. What clients have you done work for?

Being in the government and probity team, I predominantly do work for government agencies at the Federal, State and local level, both within Australia and overseas. Some of our major clients include the Department of Defence, NSW Land and Housing Corporation and New Zealand Inland Revenue Department.

5. Have you had much client contact?

As TressCox is a mid-tier law firm, the level of client contact exposure as a junior solicitor has been excellent. My supervising Partner encourages it. I have had a lot of opportunity to interact with clients and develop my client management skills.

6. Have you been given much responsibility?

The level of responsibility that I have been given has always been within my capability while still challenging me and encouraging me to expand my knowledge and experience. The tasks that I am given are interesting, rewarding and challenging and I have gained a lot of experience in a short period of time.

7. What type of training have you undertaken at the firm?

TressCox regularly provides seminars and training sessions on various topics to assist team members with professional development. I have also had the opportunity to conduct probity and contract law training for various clients.

8. What hours do you generally work? what is expected?

While a lot of firms claim to advocate a 'work-life balance', TressCox really does encourage this balance. I generally work very reasonable hours unless there is an urgent task that needs to be completed. It is always made clear what is expected of me and there is always help available when required.

9. How have you received feedback about your performance?

I have received regular feedback, both formal and informal, in relation to my performance. In addition to 2 performance reviews each year, I often receive informal feedback from my supervising partner on particular tasks. I find that my supervisors are very forthcoming with feedback, which has been very helpful in terms of my professional development.

10. How would you describe the culture and working environment within the firm?

The culture and working environment at TressCox is very open, friendly and supportive. Senior team members are accessible and are very generous with their time and knowledge.

11. What do you like most about working for the firm?

The best thing about TressCox is the culture and working environment. I work with a great group of people and I have gained many invaluable and rewarding experiences.

12. What tips would you give to someone applying to your firm?

It is important to show how and what you can contribute to the culture of TressCox and highlight things that make you stand out.
