Inside Jackson McDonald (WA)

What drew you to this firm?

Following a number of clerkships and part-time work at law firms, I found that I very much enjoyed the culture and the work which the firm undertakes. However the most compelling feature of the firm was its people, both at a professional level and on a personal level.

What areas have you worked in?

Building, Construction and Professional Indemnity and Commercial/Corporate. However, due to the considerable flexibility at the firm I have also been able to work in other areas of the firm when required.

What type of work have you done in each of these areas?

During my Building and Construction rotation I was involved in a number of large insurance matters, general dispute resolution matters and some large commercial projects for government clients. During my commercial rotation I have been involved in several transactions acting for both vendor and purchaser (involving lots of drafting and due diligence), have prepared agreements, been involved in taxation and superannuation matters and assisted in the preparation of various opinions.

What clients have you done work for?

Currently, in the Corporate/Commercial team, I work with a large range of clients including individuals and corporations, various state government departments, accountants and large incorporated associations.

Have you had much client contact?

Yes, I have had quite a lot of client contact, particularly as my experience and competence has increased. In addition to meeting with clients I am now often a client's point of contact at the firm.

Have you been given much responsibility?

Yes, considerable conduct of files has been given to me, however I feel that the added responsibility is met with suitable supervision from senior practitioners at the firm. The responsibility has increased in proportion to my experience and competency which has led to constant and exciting challenges.

What type of training have you undertaken at the firm?

The firm has an ongoing CLE/Professional Development program and continuous training in the firm's IT systems. In the AC year there is additional training and fantastic support and mentoring in relation to the "adjustment" from the comparative peace of university life to working in a large commercial law firm.

What hours do you generally work? What is expected?

The hours are quite reasonable, 8.00 to 6.00 is a standard day, subject to urgent work which arises from time to time.

How have you received feedback about your performance?

There is a formal performance review procedure which the firm maintains. Additionally I have found that many of the senior practitioners at the firm are happy to give feedback on an ad hoc basis, which is quite helpful.

How would you describe the culture and working environment within the firm?

The culture at the firm is friendly and supportive. There is an emphasis on enjoying your time at the firm while having the opportunity to be involved in some great work. The firm also has a great social aspect, with all the regular Friday night drinks plus certain firm social and sporting events through the year.

What do you like most about working for the firm?

A mixture of interesting and challenging work, great mentors, and an enjoyable social aspect.

What tips would you give to someone applying to your firm?

A clerkship is often very helpful but not a vital ingredient to a successful application. Be willing to show your enthusiasm for Jackson McDonald and attempt to illustrate this in your application and covering letter.

Any other comments?

Best of luck to all applicants and I look forward to seeing you at Jac Mac!
