Seasonal Clerkships
A taste of graduate life - Summer Clerkships
Our Summer Clerkship is a great way for undergraduates in the penultimate year of their degree to get a real idea of what they want from a career in law. A placement here may also lead to an offer to join our Graduate Development Program. A Summer Clerkship offers:
- A chance to assist senior lawyers on real matters;
- Access to a lawyer “buddy” who can offer advice and help;
- Formal induction, presentations and talks about our work and what you need to be a successful lawyer; and
- Plenty of opportunities to socialise with other Sparkies.
While you’re with us you’ll learn more about our firm and meet partners, associates and trainees who’ll give you an honest view of life at Sparkes.
“Sometimes the work was complicated and mentally challenging, but it was satisfying to be doing work that was going to be relevant to a matter, rather than just smaller administrative tasks. I felt my contribution was valued and I was never made to feel as though I was a hindrance to those around me, despite my limited knowledge of the areas I was working in.”
Caroline Davies, 2006/2007 Summer Clerkship
“The highpoint of my clerkship was making my first appearance in the Administrative Appeals Tribunal. It exceeded my expectations as I did not think that “hands on exposure” would extend to me standing before a registrar in the AAT!”
Jaspreet Singh-Bains, 2007/08 Summer Clerkship
Graduate Program
GRADUATE DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM
Freedom to explore your future
We are looking for graduates who are intelligent, personable, committed and demonstrate leadership qualities.
Our Graduate Development/Articled Clerk Program provides exposure to a number of specialist practice groups and gives you the opportunity to:
- Try different areas of law before specialising;
- Get real exposure to matters;
- Learn skills from different lawyers and practice groups;
- Develop and learn with manageable billing targets;
- Build networks and contacts; and
- Develop a broad understanding of our firm.
Within each practice group, you will have a dedicated mentor to oversee your training and development. We also offer formal development training in the program covering all areas necessary to become an effective practitioner.
Throughout the program, you will be exposed to real work including court work, drafting, briefing counsel, conferences, client meetings and legal research. You may also have the opportunity to contribute to marketing activities such as writing articles for newsletters and preparing seminar papers. You have an achievable budget which allows you to concentrate on learning and developing your skills and competencies.
Your practical on-the-job training is also supported by formal guidance. You'll spend your first week in orientation sessions at our Sydney office; this includes everything from how to leverage our career management tools to accessing the Firm's resources and support infrastructure. Of course, that's only the start. Throughout the program and your career at Sparke Helmore, you'll have regular opportunities to participate in formal learning and knowledge sharing forums.
